Spartan Stores YMCA Awarded Grant from Autism Speaks

Grand Rapids, MI (Dec. 16, 2013) – Thanks to funding from Autism Speaks, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, in partnership with Hope Network and local parent support groups, is expanding the services available for young adults diagnosed with autism and their families in West Michigan. The YMCA Family Hope program will provide parents and young adults diagnosed with autism an opportunity to gather at the Y and participate in engaging social and physical activity, garner emotional support, and have time for respite.

Wellness-based activities will be provided in a group setting to help participants develop social skills, and parents and young adults will participate together in physical activities centered on teamwork, new experiences, and fitness. Participants will also have time for casual socialization in our Y Activity Center where they will be encouraged to work and play together, interact, and have fun.

The Y partners with schools, health care organizations, community centers and churches to ensure healthy choices are accessible and affordable for everyone in our community.  These innovative outreach programs work to eliminate barriers to good health for those most vulnerable and provide the tools and support to ensure success.
