White Elephant Sale Raises Record $88,300 for YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin
Grand Rapids, MI (April 29, 2015) – The Grand Rapids YMCA Service Club hosted its 77th annual White Elephant Sale April 24 and 25, raising a record-setting $88,300, before minimal expenses, for YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin.
Thousands of shoppers came out to this volunteer-run sale at 3450 Plainfield Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525. This year, the White Elephant Sale offered more than one million items, including office supplies, clothes, building supplies, books, bicycles, furniture, tools, TV’s, and a car. Item donations come from all over the Grand Rapids area. Many local manufacturers and retailers, such as Amway, Steelcase, and Irwin Seating, donated surplus inventory.
“This year’s sale went beyond our expectations,” said Neil Topliffe, past president of the Grand Rapids Y Service Club. “We would like to thank the community for the support. So many children will be able to benefit from the success of this sale at YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin.”
The White Elephant Sale’s objective is to raise funds to help make summers special for children, by helping them go to camp and experience nature. Over the history of this special event, nearly two million dollars has been contributed to YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin. The funds are used for capital improvements to Camp Manitou-Lin, giving kids the opportunity to experience wonderful amenities like the nature cabin, archery ranges, basketball courts, football-sized fields, Spirit Farms Riding Center, and more.
“We are incredibly grateful to have a group like the Y Service Club whose members support YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin with many hours of volunteer time, as well as generous financial support through events like the White Elephant Sale,” said Ron Nelson, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
