YMCA & Lowes Partnership Beautifies Community

Grand Rapids, MI (Oct. 8, 2013) – The YMCA and Lowes are partnering together to care for the community. The Visser Family YMCA has been selected as a recipient of a Lowes Heroes project where Lowe’s employees work together with non-profits to create a lasting impact on communities.  The project will involve a large number of volunteers working alongside Lowes employees to landscape and develop educational gardens in front of the Y.

This project allows Lowes employees to design a space that will provide garden areas where children in the Y’s Impact After School Program and summer day camp will have the opportunity to grow their own vegetables and herbs.  This exciting partnership helps the Y promote hands-on education along with healthy living, and making good choices.  Children will plant, tend, and harvest the gardens to better understand life cycles and how vegetables and herbs can be incorporated into a healthy eating plan. The gardens will serve as a catalyst for bringing community and families together.

Work on this three day project started on Monday, October 7 at 9:00 am outside the Visser Family YMCA located at 3540 Fairlanes SW in Grandville.  Volunteers will construct the three gardens, design a watering system and plant vegetation.  Lunch will be generously provided to all volunteers by Braans of Grandville.

“It’s exciting to have the community rally behind this project,” noted Kendall Klingelsmith, Associate Executive Director of the Visser Family YMCA.  “Lowes is a great partner in helping us beautify our area and give kids an educational opportunity that will result in making healthier choices.”
